Golf Cart Traffic Study

Overview

Faculty and students in the Civil Engineering department conducted a comprehensive traffic study aimed at assessing the dynamics of interactions between golf carts and automobiles. This study encompassed visits to three distinct locations within Nocatee, situated in St. Johns County, as well as one site located in the Villages in Lake County. Below is a video of one of the intersections observed during the study. Please be advised the video does not contain audio.

The Research Technology Services (RTS) staff worked with the faculty and students in the Civil Engineering department to assist with photo- and videography of the sites observed in the study.

  • Golf Cart Traffic Study Video

The video below is a sample portion of the video captured from a drone hovering at 300 feet above the intersections of Stillwater Trail and Canal Street at The Villages, Florida. A Skydio 2+ drone was used which has an approximate flight time of 30 minutes. Multiple flights were completed to capture around two hours of video to use for the traffic study.

  • Aerial Videography
Research Technology Services staff used drones to conduct aerial surveillance around the selected traffic intersections characterized by substantial volumes of golf cart activity. Over several hours, during periods identified as peak times for golf cart and automobile coexistence, the drone captured video footage documenting these interactions. The researchers utilize the videos in the traffic modeling software to better understand the interaction and to suggest ways to improve any issues.
  • Ground Level Photography
Research Technology Services assisted with the setup and configuration of GoPro Max 360 cameras for ground-level photo- and videography.
