Crinum asiaticum - Giant crinum

Approximately sixty to one hundred Crinum species are found throughout the tropics, mostly in the southern hemisphere. This species is one of the largest and is native to tropical Asia. The evergreen leaves may grow to three feet long from a large bulb. In summer, tall stalks with white flowers stand above the foliage. A full grown plant makes a striking specimen in the landscape. The flowers are butterfly pollinated. A smaller species, Crinum americanum, is native to Florida wetlands.

Giant crinum is an easy plant to grow in northeast Florida. Where they are present, lubber grasshoppers are a destructive pest of crinums.
