Indigofera heteranthera - Himalayan indigo

About seven hundred species of Indigofera are native to warm parts of the world. Indigofera tinctoria is the commercial source of indigo dye. They are mostly shrubs. Himalayan indigo is a suckering shrub to about five feet tall with small, compound leaves and spikes of bright magenta flowers. It flowers over a long period of time in the summer. It is one of the cold hardiest species of indigo and one of the most widely cultivated.

This is an uncommon landscape plant in northeast Florida. It grows well in a sunny, well-drained site.
