#MaskUpOspreys

To protect the health and safety of the Osprey community, all faculty, staff, students and anyone else on UNF’s campus must wear a mask at all times in all indoor and outdoor areas. Employees working alone in their offices and students who are alone in a room are the only exceptions.

The use of cloth face coverings can potentially slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. It is our shared responsibility to do everything we can to protect our fellow Ospreys, and we appreciate all of your support to protect our community.

Visit #MaskUpOspreys social media campaign for more information on the importance of wearing masks, including proper ways to handle and wear face coverings, please visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines

Faculty spotlight: Dr. Stephynie Perkins

Dr. Stephynie Perkins, an associate professor and graduate director in the School of Communication, is the first recipient of the UNF Black Alumni Association Achievement Award in the Notable Faculty/Staff Member category.

She accepted the 2020-2021 award on behalf of the School of Communication and the UNF faculty and staff who are dedicated to the students.

“It’s not just about faculty, it’s not just about staff,” Perkins said. “We all have to work together to make sure that students succeed.”

To her, being named the recipient of the award means that former students acknowledge the value of her contribution to their education.

“The job of education isn’t just in a book or in an article, it’s to be in the community and working with people and serving people,” Perkins said.

Associate Instructor Roberta Doggett has worked with Perkins for more than 10 years and said the award she received is well deserved.

“Dr. Perkins is one of the hardest working faculty members I know,” Doggett said. “She is an outstanding teacher and scholar; plus she is committed to educating her students on the importance of diversity and inclusion so that our society is robust and prosperous.”

Perkins also recently was accepted into the UNF Lead program, which prepares faculty from underrepresented groups for leadership positions. Program members learn about higher education administration, managing strategic resources, and ethical leadership.

As part of the program, Perkins is helping to expand the diversity of the School of Communication’s Professional Advisory Board.

Perkins has been teaching public relations in higher education for 22 years, the past 17 at UNF.

Student spotlight: Lia Sanchez

Lia Sanchez is a senior at UNF majoring in Communication with a concentration in public relations and a minor in marketing. She moved to Florida from Cuba five years ago. When asked about her hobbies she said, “I love to sing, play piano and just do nothing to have time to think about my goals and how to achieve them.”

In three years, Sanchez sees herself traveling the world and adding more products to her company, Wuajaira. She would like to create more strategies for her company to grow. If she could live anywhere in the world, she would still pick the United States.

The United States “allows you to be and have anything you want, as long as you work to achieve whatever [it] is that you want to be,” she said.

One of her biggest accomplishments has been creating her own e-commerce amidst the pandemic.

“Wuajaira is something that I wanted to do for a long time and it finally happened,” she said.

Sanchez explained more about her brand: “Wuajaira is my ‘Spanglish’ translation of the Spanish word ‘guajira.’ In Cuba, a guajira is a person from the countryside. However, people say that the word comes from around the 1890s when Americans intervened in the war between Cuba and Spain. Americans called Cuban soldiers war heroes, but Cubans didn't understand English, and they thought Americans were calling them guajiros. Its origin is uncertain, and there is evidence that its meaning can be more indigenous.

“That's why I called my business Wuajaira, to have a mix of what I come from, a small town in Cuba, my roots and culture, and to demonstrate and inspire immigrants like me, that it is possible to create and have something even though you are starting from zero.”

Sanchez launched Wuajaira on Dec. 4, 2020, with three initial products of Mosquito Repellent Incense. Her products can be found at www.wuajaira.com

Student spotlight: Arturo Jimenez-Read

When Arturo Jimenez-Read was 10 years old, he was most proud of the fire-breathing dragons he loved to sketch. He’s still proud of them – and they’re still part of his life. His love of drawing and dragons has blossomed into an appreciation for the fantasy arts world and inspired him to come up with some of the amazing ideas he has today.

Now, at 18 years old, Jimenez-Read is a freshman at UNF pursuing a degree in communication with a concentration in digital video production.

He enjoys drawing and writing in his free time and someday hopes to be the author of a fantasy novel. He loves creating characters and stories, and giving them certain abilities, and he likes the process of explaining how a certain character gained supernatural powers.

“Not everything has to have a connection but certain things can have connections that can be apparent to a reader,” he said.

Within the next few years, Jimenez-Read sees himself graduating college and getting his degree. He is looking forward to eventually completing an internship to gain more experience in his field.

“I would really like to do an internship to understand how much time people in the field devote to each project,” he said.

Jimenez-Read hopes to one day be a published author or a game designer.

“It’s really fun to tell stories, see people’s reactions, see how they understand them and (see them) make their own stories after that,” he said.

He has gone through life remembering one piece of advice from his mother, which is to treat others how you’d like to be treated.

“Simply be kind to other people because it’s not really about getting something in return. It’s about feeling good and knowing that you are being a good person,” he said.

Caitlin McManus is a senior majoring in communication with a concentration in multimedia video production and a minor in literature. In the future, she would like to pursue a career in the TV or film industry.

“I see myself – hopefully - just doing a job that I enjoy in TV or film, learning every day, and being happy or at least doing the best I can,” she said.

In her free time McManus enjoys watching movies, going for walks and dancing. McManus said if she could live anywhere it would be Seattle.

“The first time I visited I felt an instant connection and thought it was such a beautiful city with so many things to do,” she said. “And I love the music scene. My favorite restaurant, Ristorante Machiavelli, is also there and I would love nothing more than the ability to eat there every day.”

When asked what advice she would give her 16-year-old self, McManus said it would be to, “recognize the anxiety and be kind to myself. You are enough.

Student spotlight: Shelby Senesac

By Hayley Simonson
Multimedia, Journalism & Production major

Shelby Senesac is a senior at the University of North Florida studying English with a minor in mass communication. She recalls being proud of her imagination when she was a child.

“I didn’t play any sports, so I found myself playing teacher or detective a lot,” she said. “I enjoyed making things up inside my head.”

When she was around 11 or 12 years old her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“It was definitely a defining moment in my life that changed the way I think,” she said. “Although I was young, it really set in the reality that some things in life are completely out of control. It changed the way I think about life in general.”

Three years from now, after graduation, Senesac sees herself working at a job she loves, which ideally would be a position as a writer, editor or an investigative journalist. She can imagine buying a home of her own where she could write her heart out and enjoy life. She will definitely have dogs.

Some of Shelby’s favorite things to do in her free time include reading American author Stephen King novels, writing, watching true-crime shows and documentaries, working out, and spending time with her family and two Great Danes. She would love to live in New York City, and if she had to have one meal the rest of her life, tacos would suffice.

Because she’s a perfectionist, Senesac’s biggest fear is failure. The best advice she’d give to someone younger than her is to fall in love with yourself, and push yourself to reach your goals and dreams.

“When life gets tough, and it feels like everything is falling apart, and you feel like giving up, I promise that you’ll make it out on the other side even stronger,” she said.

This course is a “major elective” for students in Advertising, Multimedia Journalism and Public Relations. The objective of this course is to teach students the tools necessary for social media content creation. Students will learn about mobile phone photography and video shooting. They will experiment with green screens and GoPro cameras. Also, they will master a range of design, image, video and audio editing software (Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, Audition, and Spark). Internships offered at School of Communication

The UNF School of Communication is accepting applications for summer and fall semester 2021 interns. The internship program provides an essential real-world experience throughout the semester for our students enrolled in the senior internship program.

For Multimedia Journalism & Digital Video Production students, SoC particularly needs the following: on-camera news anchors, sports reporter/anchor, and show producer. In the fall semester we expect to fill those positions and an additional production Tricaster director with flexible hours. So, why wait to set up your internship for summer and fall when you have the opportunity right now?

The intention is to expand the brand of Inside Swoop -- a student-produced, daily 90-second show focused on news, entertainment, and sports -- which provides hands-on experiences for students aspiring to be anchors, reporters, producers or directors. SoC is seeking students who have a strong interest in broadcasting.

In addition, the SoC is accepting resumes for the social media intern for both the department and Inside Swoop in 90.

Contact professor Ken Thomas at k.thomas@unf.edu for more information or email your resume for these positions. Visit the SoC's internship site for the senior internship requirements and applications.

Are you planning to complete your senior internship this summer?

There are plenty of pre-approved sites which are offering internships face-to-face, remote, or a combination of both. For pre-approved internship sites, visit communication internship information and search your major field to see what’s available.

Remember, you can’t register for the Senior Internship Class (MMC 4975) until your internship has been approved. The submission deadline for applications is April 15. Applications for internships can be found on the Communication Majors Canvas Home page or under “Forms” on the Internship website.

Student spotlight: Ketan "KJ" Narotam

By Michael Tracey
Multimedia Journalism student

Ketan ‘KJ’ Narotam once spent his days as a computer programmer doing the same tasks every day. He turned to the UNF School of Communication to tap into his creative side and is now a senior.

Narotam is working toward his degree with a concentration in multimedia journalism and production. He plans to graduate this spring.

As a student, he has worked hard to align his passions with career goals. He wants to get a job in print journalism or in post-production work and editing. In addition to that he wants to work with audio.

“I would like to do something with music,” Narotam said. “Do highlights. Just follow bands around. Music has always been a big part of my life since I was a kid.”

With music in mind, a defining moment in his life changed the way he would think forever. This moment sent ripples in its wake throughout his years and shaped what he wants to accomplish.

“When I got the first Clash album, they changed the way I thought about politics and made me more open-minded,” Narotam said. “Pretty much everything to do with writing and everything stemmed from that one album.”

Being a senior and future graduate, Narotam has advice and optimism for younger students.

“Do what you’re passionate about doing,” he said. “If you want to be a writer, be a writer. Don’t worry about what people tell you. Just do what you want to do.”

MSNBC Executive Producer spoke with Communication students

Students in professor Nick Tatro's JOU3109 class spoke with MSNBC Executive Producer Moshe Arenstein via Zoom during their class on March 23. He showed the students how he directs the show remotely and discussed career opportunities. He produces PoliticsNation with the Rev. Al Sharpton, which airs weekends on MSNBC.

Tatro and Arenstein met in the mid-1990s when Tatro, then Associated Press chief of bureau in Jerusalem, hired Arenstein as an intern.

Seminar offered on The Importance of Communicating Clearly

PRSSA is offering a seminar, The Importance of Communicating Clearly, to all Communication majors at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 30.

A panel of professionals from various industries will discuss the importance of being understood and understanding others, which is a highly coveted skill. Word choices, cadence, tone and how things are phrased, matter, and can mean the difference between "you're hired" and "you're fired."

Miscommunications can be avoided if people are aware of what they are and how they occur. Learn from the experts on why and how communicating clearly is vital, regardless of age or experience level.

Student spotlight: Magduline "Maj" Bakor

By Jac Caruso
Multimedia Journalism & Production student

Magduline “Maj” Bakor has always been drawn to the field of communication for the connection it gives her to the people around her, and the freedom it gives her to express herself. A self-proclaimed introvert, Bakor said writing and communication played a pivotal role in her growth and gave her an outlet to speak her mind. When she was in elementary school, she started a weekly paper as a platform for her to be able to speak her mind.

“It was a major step in my own development,” she said.

Bakor enjoys people watching and learning about them without injecting herself into the narrative. It’s a skill that serves her well in her current position. She works in the media lab, checking out camera equipment multiple afternoons throughout the week.

Bakor knew she wanted to attend UNF after her sister attended in 2008. After visiting the campus and attending lectures with her sister, Bakor knew she wanted to earn her degree here.

The 20-year-old sophomore has grand dreams for when she graduates UNF. Immediately following graduation, she plans to land a communication job in Atlanta. She hopes to work internationally in broadcasting or as part of a social media management team.

International life does not intimidate Bakor in the slightest. It might be due to advice from her mother, who stresses that individuals should never let fear and anxiety consume them or they will never go anywhere. It might also be due to her international roots. Her family is from Morocco. She is actually the only member of her family to have been born in the U.S. She said she would love to live in Morocco one day.

“I think just based on hearing stories and seeing old VHS tapes from them make me want to stay there,” she said. “Other destinations would be South Korea and France.”

Student spotlight: Joe Ellis

by Jay Seibel
Multimedia Journalism & Production student

Joseph Ellis is a senior studying multimedia production and journalism who came to UNF on an athletic scholarship -- all the way from across the pond.

Originally from Birmingham, England, Ellis, 21, made the move after receiving a scholarship to play tennis for the Ospreys.

“College tennis is what brought me to UNF. It was a scary decision which didn’t hit home until I woke up to get on the plane, but I wouldn’t change it for anything,” he said.

A skilled tennis player since his youth, Ellis has represented the Ospreys since his freshman year, when he helped UNF win the conference championship.

“We won at our home courts in front of our home crowd. It’s my favorite memory so far at UNF,” he said.

When not practicing his serve, Ellis pursues other interests.

“In my free time I listen to a lot of music and read about art. I love the way the two subjects come together,” he said.

Those interests led him to study communication. While moving thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean seemed daunting at first, Ellis’ optimism is what has driven him to succeed.

“One of my biggest fears is being unhappy, so I try to be positive,” he said. “The best advice I’ve ever received is to not dwell in the past and to embrace change.”

Ellis said coming to UNF helped him embrace this outlook.

“Moving to America changed my perspective on life,” he said. “It made me become comfortable with the unknown and how to form relationships. This taught me to be myself wherever I am.”

Ellis hopes to bring this outlook with him into his future.

He misses home a little. But the weather in Florida keeps him pretty happy. He hopes to earn his degree and work for the Association of Tennis Professionals as a sports journalist. The ATP’s headquarters? Ponte Vedra Beach.

Internships offered at School of Communication

The UNF School of Communication is accepting applications for Fall semester 2021 interns. The internship program provides an essential real-world experience throughout the semester for our students enrolled in the senior internship program.

For Multimedia Journalism and Digital Video Production students, SoC particularly needs an on-camera news anchors, sports reporter/anchor, and show producer. In the fall semester we expect to fill those positions and an additional production Tricaster director with flexible hours. So, why wait to set up your internship for summer and fall when you have the opportunity right now?

The intention is to expand the brand of Inside Swoop -- a student-produced, daily 90-second show focused on news, entertainment and sports -- which provides hands-on experiences for students aspiring to be anchors, reporters, producers or directors.

Due April 15! Are you planning to complete your senior internship this summer?

There are plenty of pre-approved sites which are offering internships face-to-face, remote, or a combination of both. For pre-approved internship sites, go to the communication internship information page and search your major field to see what’s available.

Remember, you can’t register for the Senior Internship Class (MMC 4975) until your internship has been approved. The submission deadline for applications is April 15. Applications for internships can be found on the Communication Majors Canvas Home page or under “Forms” on the Internship website.

Student spotlight: Jac Caruso

By Joe Ellis
Multimedia Journalism & Production student

Jac Caruso, a 28-year-old senior, has not always been an Osprey. She began her degree at Florida State College at Jacksonville, which paved the way for her future.

After taking a class about crime in America, Jac’s curiosity for the psychology of crime grew. However, FSCJ didn’t have the coursework available for her to major in anything close to that. She transferred to UNF, where she’ll graduate this month with a double major in multimedia journalism and production, and psychology.

Following her graduation, she intends to further her studies in forensic psychology in anticipation of a career focusing on violent crime. Jac has never been a squeamish person - she reads about Ted Bundy, an American serial killer, in her spare time.

Her attitude toward the U.S. justice system highlights some issues she would like to see change. She believes prioritizing punishment over rehabilitation has led to a vindictive cycle in the system.

“Mental health is overlooked and dismissed across the country,” she said.

Her progressive attitude toward justice sparks interesting conversations over how things could change.

Her passion for justice is driven by her two children. Keeping them safe is her priority and removing bad people from society and finding justice is one way she knows she can do this. Giving birth to her daughter nine years ago changed her attitude towards life. At the time, she was a 19-year-old teenager who was raising a baby. She felt obliged to mature and become the mother they deserved. Her biggest fear is failing her responsibilities as a mother.

Jac’s lifestyle is anything but ordinary: she’s juggling three jobs, studying and homeschooling her children by herself. Nevertheless, she manages to do this with a smile on her face. When she isn’t dyeing her daughter’s hair, she reads books about serial killers.

Jac cannot remember anything from her childhood due to a stroke she suffered in 2017. This damaged the part of the brain that deals with long-term memory, she said. However, one thing she can remember is that she loves sushi and would eat it for the rest of her life if she could. She’s a spontaneous person who doesn’t like to be restricted by a plan. She craves honesty and loves the weirdness in people that provides society with diversity.

Raleigh, North Carolina, is her dream-home destination. She and her children would venture out to the local parks and seek adventure like they do in Jacksonville on the weekends. Jac has also become a self-described “LEGO master” after spending so much of her free time creating weird and wonderful things with her children.

Jac soon begins a new job with Fidelity National Financial and sees herself staying in this role. It allows her to homeschool her two children and spend more time building LEGOs with them.

Student Complaints and Appeals
All departments on campus take student complaints seriously, maintain a log of complaints, and analyze the log for patterns. Students who would like to raise a complaint to the School Director may do so via e-mail or other means. There is also an anonymous complaint file that can be requested at the front desk in the School's lobby. More information about grade appeals can be found on the UNF One-Stop Student Services webpage.

Student spotlight: Roberto Lopez

By Casey Peyton

Roberto Lopez is a senior at the University of North Florida finishing his degree in multimedia journalism.

Originally from Jupiter, Florida, Roberto came to the University of North Florida to be closer to loved ones. Soon he would find himself in love with the new opportunities and scenery as well.

During his time living on campus with no car and no friends, Roberto found favorite spots throughout the grounds. After a month of solitude, he began enjoying it with new friends.

“I just stayed on campus," he said. "I got to know a lot of the nooks and crannies of everything."

Roberto finds himself most happy when he is doing anything related to music. He sings, plays guitar, and plays the bass. When he has a moment of free time, he usually fills it by playing an instrument.

Now that his college career is coming to an end, Roberto is excited for this next chapter in his life.

“I see myself playing live shows again, I see myself helping other people with live shows, and I see myself touring again,” Roberto said.

After he graduates, Roberto doesn’t know how long he will stay in Jacksonville. But he’s certain of a couple of other things: He hopes masks will soon be in the past, and music will always be in his life.

Vaccinations and masks are expected of students and faculty

The presidents of Florida's 12 state universities are asking all students to get the COVID-19 virus vaccination before arriving on campus for the fall semester. In a letter published by the State University System, the Board of Governors "strongly" recommended students get vaccinated.

It is a "strong expectation" that everyone wear a mask at all times inside any UNF facility, said Bob Greenlaw, UNF COVID-19 task force coordinator, in a communication issued to students, faculty and staff on Aug. 10.

Students may present their CDC vaccination card to qualify for a $100 Ozzie Bucks incentive. For more information, visit UNF Coronavirus Updates.

For information on COVID-19 vaccines, visit Student Health Services.

 Lauren Connell sitting on grass.

Student Spotlight -- Lauren Connell

By Trevor Voytko
Multimedia Journalism major

Lauren Connell is a senior at the University of North Florida studying journalism with a minor in photography. She believes the best stories have photography with them.

Her professional goal is to have a career in photojournalism. She thinks that having her own column in a newspaper would be one of the best jobs.

“I started in a yearbook class which was also a journalism class, and I just figured out how much I love photography and writing. So, why not match them together?” she said.

Connell’s five-year goal is to graduate with her master’s degree and move to either South Carolina or North Carolina.

If she could go back and give her high-school self some advice, Connell said it would be this: “Don’t worry so much. I thought my life was over when I didn’t get a perfect score on the SATs. I thought people cared so much more, but they don’t. It’s really just me versus myself.”

Speaking of advice, Connell’s advice to incoming UNF freshmen would be to simply enjoy it.

“Go to that party that you don’t want to go to, but also enjoy those long nights and early mornings at the library. Those were the best,” she said.

Connell is from Melbourne, Fla., and has a pet dog, Eno, a shepherd mix. She misses knowing where everything is in her town and running into friends in unexpected places.

Finally, Connell unquestionably prefers working a dream job for less money than a so-so job that will make her rich.

“The idea of being behind a desk doing something I don’t love just haunts me,” she said.

 Ashley Goebel in SoC Studio.

Student Spotlight -- Ashley Goebel

By Benjamin Guthrie
Multimedia Journalism & Production student

Ashley Goebel is a senior at UNF majoring in information science and multimedia production. She’s also minoring in digital marketing and public health, and she’s a catcher for the North Florida Osprey's women's softball team.

Goebel is from Jupiter, Fla., and while she misses her hometown, as well as her family and friends who reside there, she also loves Jacksonville.

“When I graduate, I’ll either go back home or stay [in Jacksonville],” she said.

Currently, Goebel is interning as a technical director for UNF Communication's TV news shows, and she enjoys the behind-the-scenes work associated with that position.

“[The internship] is a lot of behind-the-scenes of what goes on between live production. I think that’s really interesting and a lot of fun, so I might be leaning towards that in the future,” Goebel said.

On top of her school life, softball also takes up a good chunk of her time. In between classes, Goebel is busy with softball practice and conditioning training.

“I have either weights or conditioning early in the morning. Then I have to go to class, and then right after class I go to practice for about three hours. After practice I go back to class, and then it’s already time to do homework and go to bed,” she said.

In her free time, Goebel likes to go to the beach.

“Jupiter -- where I’m from -- is a big beach town. So, I’m used to being by the water,” Goebel said.

She also likes to hang out with friends, play video games and watch movies.

When asked what advice she would give to a freshman, Goebel focused on the importance of in-person classes.

“Take in-person classes and really learn the material that’s being taught to you. Don’t just do it for the grade, do it to learn,” she said.
