American Sign Language Zone (ASL Zone)

The American Sign Language Zone (ASL Zone) Living-Learning Community (LLC) is primarily for any first-year student who has experience with ASL and/or is a native ASL user, wants to learn more about ASL and/or is interested in the ASL, Deaf Education and Interpreting major(s) and/or minor(s) here at UNF. LLC participants will build connections with fellow students, faculty and staff. Students will not only be supported with their transition to UNF, they will also create bonds within UNF and the Jacksonville community.

Eligibility & Course Requirements

  • Complete the Housing Contract & LLC and Interest Housing Application
  • No course is required, but you must have prior experience with ASL and/or enrollment in an ASL course at UNF
  • Live in Osprey Cove the designated ASL community
  • Support/Attend Living-Learning Community events and programs

Program Objectives

As a member of the ASL Zone LLC, you will be:

  • Introduced to students with a passion for learning and practicing ASL
  • Engage with Exceptional, Deaf, and Interpreter Education (EDIE) leaders – faculty, staff, alums, ambassadors – who can strengthen the educational experience 
  • Involved with a community of students who share similar academic interests and professional goals 
  • Immersed in an environment where students can have fun while establishing an identity with EDIE and UNF

Upcoming Activities Include:

  • Weekly community hours
  • Silent Karaoke
  • Visits to the ASL Lab
  • Volunteer opportunities to ASL conferences
