UNF Cheer makes history with podium finish at NCA College Nationals

In a milestone achievement for the University of North Florida, the UNF cheer team soared to new heights this weekend, placing third in the Advanced Small Coed Division I at the NCA College Nationals in Daytona Beach. This marks the first time in program history that UNF Cheer has landed a top three finish, earning a spot in the winner’s circle and bringing home a trophy.

The Advanced Small Coed Division I is known as one of the most competitive divisions at Nationals, with nine elite teams vying for the podium. Among the contenders were powerhouse schools like Boston University, Weber State University and Stephen F. Austin University.

UNF’s third-place finish caps off a remarkable season for the team, who qualified for Nationals back in July by sweeping the competition at NCA College Camp, also held in Daytona. They earned Best Overall Honors, taking first place in the Rally Routine and Crowd Leading segments, along with multiple All-American athlete recognitions, which secured them a coveted Gold Bid to Nationals.

“Proud doesn’t even begin to cover it,” said UNF cheerleading coach Nicole Mills. “This team built everything from the ground up with grit, heart and relentless work. What they’ve accomplished is more than a placement, it’s a testament to their character, especially in one of the most competitive divisions.”

Choregraphed by Brian Cao, director of NCA Choreography, the team's dynamic routine captured both the energy and precision required to stand out on a national stage. Despite the demands of national-level preparation, the team remained deeply involved on campus, cheering throughout the volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball seasons.

This year’s NCA College Nationals was the largest in the event’s 30-year history, hosting nearly 500 teams and more than 10,000 athletes from across the country.

UNF Cheer made its nationals debut in 2015, with a previous best finish of fourth place. This year’s historic third-place trophy sets a new standard for the program and signals its rising status among collegiate cheer powerhouses.
