Master of Science in ASL/English Interpreting

General Practitioner Concentration

Health Care Interpreting students posing in scrubsThe General Practitioner concentration is designed to meet the needs of (a) pre-certified students who aspire to national certification and general practice or, (b) certified interpreters who seek to increase their specialized interpreting skill sets and knowledge bases. The program consists of 30 credit hours that include courses in specialized settings (i.e., healthcare, mental health, legal, DeafBlind), mentoring, research, service learning, and intercultural contexts.  You can review the catalog program of study and  admissions requirements by selecting the appropriate button below.  The current course sequence is also provided below.

The General Practitioner concentration is offered via distance learning (no need to relocate).  The master's program is developed in accordance with current spoken and signed language research and strives to provide students a global perspective on the interpreting profession, a foundation in interpreting studies literature, and a growth mindset for lifelong learning and skills development. Many graduates from the General Practitioner concentration are working as interpreter educators; however, teaching interpreting is addressed more extensively in the Interpreting Pedagogy concentration

    Program Mission Statement

    The mission of the General Practitioner concentration within the MS Degree in ASL/English Interpreting is to provide pre-and post-certified students with specialized skill development, a foundation in interpreting studies literature, and a growth mindset for lifelong learning and skills development. With a curriculum developed in accordance with current spoken and signed language research, our goal is to bring students closer to national certification, or if already certified, to advance the use of ASL and English in specialized settings that include mental health, medical, and legal arenas. We aspire to prepare students who consistently demonstrate interpersonal skills that reflect unconditional positive regard for all participants in the interpreting process and professional dispositions that embrace diversity, respect, equity, and equality of opportunity among the diverse language and cultural groups of the community.

  • Course Sequence - General Practitioner - Fall 23 Admits

    Major:  ASL/English Interpreting

    Concentration:  General Practitioner

    Program Format:  The program is fully online and most classes will include some synchronous online meetings.  

    Program Notes:  This program admits Fall and Spring terms and courses are offered in a 5-term rotation, 2 courses per term. Although the program allows part time attendance, students who opt to take fewer classes than are offered will delay graduation for at least one year as courses are offered in a rotation. Courses are only offered once in a 5-semester cycle.  The course sequence below is designed to give you an idea of when courses will be offered, but it is subject to change.
