ExpLearn: Global or Sociocultural Learning

Global or sociocultural learning activities require sustained engagement with and study of cultures other than one’s own. This experiential learning activity can take place inside as well as outside the traditional classroom. Activities included in this category are intensive study abroad experiences, gap year fellows, domestic study away programs, and global scholars.

Faculty-led study abroad programs allow students to travel internationally with a Coggin faculty member and their classmates for one or two weeks while simultaneously earning credit toward their degree. Summer and semester exchange programs allow students to fully immerse themselves in the host country while earning credit toward their undergraduate major and/or minor or master’s degree program.

Undergraduate and graduate students who participate in Coggin’s short-term study abroad programs can study a range of diverse topics in a variety of locations around the world.  As part of these faculty-led programs, students not only attend business and cultural visits, engage with the local community, and make lifelong friendships with other students, but they also develop relationships with their faculty leaders who share their expertise in the field.  Recent examples include:

    • A Peru program for first-year students to learn about economic development and sustainability
    • A Germany and Belgium program, focusing on European economic integration
    • An Austria and Czech Republic program, exploring comparative management or marketing
    • A summer program at KEDGE Business School in Marseille, France, centering on sports management, marketing, communication, and strategy related to the Summer Olympics in Paris
    • Summer programs at Universidad Austral, Argentina, and Universidad de Montevideo, Uruguay, exploring Latin American trade and logistics with a focus on relationships with the U.S.
    • A summer program at ESSEC Business School’s Rabat, Morocco campus, focusing on entrepreneurship and innovation in Africa
    • A summer program at Universidad de Alicante, Spain, focusing on innovation, immigration, and social entrepreneurship

Many Study Abroad programs also satisfy other Experiential Learning categories, such as Internships, Community-Based Learning, and Creative, Innovative, and Entrepreneurial Activities. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the CCB study abroad programs saw an annual average participation of 294 students. Although the programs are still in recovery, 127 students participated in CCB’s study abroad opportunities in 2022/23.
