Explore Pathways to Healthcare


UNF MedNexus and HCA South Atlantic Division have partnered on an innovative program to foster student interest in a diversity of healthcare careers earlier in their academic career.

HCA Florida Memorial Hospital

HCA Florida Memorial Hospital is a 454-bed acute care hospital offering a full line of services with patient safety scores among the best in the area. Founded in 1969 by a group of physicians and community leaders, HCA Florida Memorial Hospital has built a strong tradition of providing quality healthcare to Northeast Florida for over 55 years. The HCA Florida Memorial team of more than 3,400 employees and 900 physicians on staff work hard every day to combine safe, quality medical care and advanced technology with compassion and understanding. HCA Healthcare is one of the nation's leading providers of healthcare and is comprised of 184 hospitals and approximately 2,000 sites of care including surgery centers, freestanding ERs, urgent care centers and physician clinics in 21 states and the United Kingdom.

How the program works

Students will work with their academic advisors to determine if the healthcare pathway program is a good option. Eligible students will apply and be screened by UNF MedNexus staff prior to being interviewed by HCA leadership. 

Ideal candidates would be:

  • interested in a career in healthcare
  • working more than 20 hours per week outside of healthcare
  • eligible for tuition reimbursement
  • a Florida resident
  • a student with a 2.0 GPA or higher

Selected students will be notified of their acceptance and begin the onboarding process at HCA Florida Memorial. HCA will assist students in enrolling in the employee tuition benefit program.  

Student will begin full-time or part-time employment at HCA and will receive benefits such as health, dental, 401K, etc. UNF will work with students to select an appropriate program of study, recommend flexible course scheduling to accommodate their work schedule, and provide structured career counseling.

This program offers students an incredible opportunity to work at a national leader in healthcare, receive mentorship from hospital leadership, explore a variety of healthcare career paths, and receive tuition assistance.  

How to apply

  1. Meet with your Academic Advisor to determine your eligibility.
  2. Complete this Application 
  3. You will be notified if you will move on to the next round of interviews by email.
  4. Interviews with HCA leadership will be scheduled based on your availability.
  5. Selected students will begin their employment in the following semester.

Sample Pathways Positions

(These are examples of positions, opportunities are dependent on what is available when you apply.)

Patient Care Technician

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with daily living activities, including bathing, grooming, and feeding.
  • Monitor and record patients' vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, and pulse.
  • Provide emotional support and companionship to patients.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment by ensuring proper sanitation and equipment usage.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

Patient Transporter

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Safely and efficiently transport patients to and from various departments within the hospital, including radiology, surgery, and discharge areas.
  • Assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds while ensuring their comfort and safety.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing staff and other healthcare team members to coordinate patient transport activities.
  • Adhere to hospital protocols and safety guidelines to prevent injuries and ensure proper patient care.
  • Provide compassionate and respectful interaction with patients, helping to alleviate any anxiety or discomfort during transport.
